 Transit Training for newcomers 

The transit training for newcomers was designed to provide newcomers with knowledge and real life experience on how to use the U.S. transportation system. The main goal is to allow newcomers to explore the surrounding neighborhoods and expand their opportunities of gaining employment, learning about the U.S. culture, and enjoy the many attractions in San Diego.

Fact: Many newcomers come from an active transportation countries and the heavily rely  on it.

NSD’s Public Transportation Use Training for Newcomers was designed by other (bilingual, bi-cultural) newcomers who have daily local transit use, receive updates from MTS about new route changes, and participate in SANDAG’s Community Based Groups meetings.  

The Training Elements are:

The Workshop:

  • Presented in different languages according to the attendees (English, Arabic, Chaldean, Dari, Kurdish)
  • Understanding the U.S. address system
  • Understanding the variety of public transportation vehicles (bus, trolley, and train)
  • Bus stops and their numbers
  • Ride’s fares and Compass Card
  • Bus and trolley routs and how to read the rout’s map
  • How to plan a trip
  • Who to contact in case of were lost
