Special Educational Workshop for Iraqi Engineers & Scientists
History
This group was founded in 2009 by a group of foreign credentialed refugees and immigrants in order to share experiences and resources among the group.
Meetings started at the small study rooms of El Cajon Public Library. when the group grew, meetings moved to the Community Room at the same library.
A year later, the meetings moved to the East County Career Center’s Board Room which fits up to 60 person. The group maintained that place for almost 2 years.
In 2013, the Degreed and Skilled Newcomer’s Group joined the NSD Tatweer organization to become one of it’s main programs. the group members became more than 200. then the leadership team decided to have separate meetings for each specialty such as: Medical, Science, IT, and Engineering, Teaching. Law, Interpreters and Translators, and Fine Arts.
In 2016, NSD Tatweer which is a community based organization with no funding was able to use technology and social media to make it easy for groups members to communicate and share information without the need for a physical meeting.
Although meetings are conducted virtually, attending an orientation about the group’s mission and vision is required before joining the group. Orientations are being held monthly at the El Cajon Library.
The group’s focus for 2016-2017 is to partner with local and national related entities and institutes to provide special events designed for the needs of the group members.
